A few pieces of advice I’ve been using … or … trying to use lately:
1.If you have something to do and it takes less than two minutes to take care of, do it immediately.
This has become slowly but surely, law in my brain. Very often I’ll leave the house without something I need that day, just because I had thought about it a zillion times but never put said thing in my bag. Now, when I think of it, I’ll take the two seconds it costs to go to the other room, grab the thing and put it in my bag. It seems simple, but it really works.
This has also come into use with phone calls. I hate making them, any phone call – social or business -- bugs me. I’ve been getting better at making these phone calls.
2.Don’t complain
I saw on Oprah this pastor who started a “no complaining” rule. He gave everyone bracelets, like those Lance Armstrong bracelets, and they’re there to remind you not to complain. I’ve found myself lately complaining about how much work I have to do. But this isn’t right because all the work is all work I chose to do, I want to do, I like doing. There is no reason that I should feel the need to stress to those around me how busy I am. They don’t care nor should they. I think sometimes it’s a great thing to “vent”, but a constant discourse on my level of business is boring as hell.
3.Shut up.
This is much like #2, and I’ve talked about this before and am starting to believe this might be my big life lesson of 2007. Sometimes I just feel the impulse to tell everyone what I know, how I know it, who told me, why they told me and why it matters. This is proving to be completely unnecessary. Not everyone needs to know what I know.
4.Stop worrying so much about everyone else.
Geez, doesn’t this ever end?
What is so very ironic about my blog post today, is that even though most of it is about me shutting up and not needing to tell everyone what I think all the time, here I am in my blog telling everyone what I think.
I’m hilarious.
