Ooh, my neoplasticity hurts

As the interesting parts of personal life wind down, the interesting parts of my “architectural life” wind up. Which is good, and the way it is supposed to be I’m sure.

Sabrina has left, I miss her. I can talk to her almost better than anyone, and it’s just one of those “I don’t have to explain myself” things. Which is lovely. And to have John and Sabrina get to know each other is really awesome and fun to watch.

I had a huge salad for lunch and will begin the detoxifying today. Also, John has given me the night off, he’s staying out of the house so I can play some video games and watch a movie, and this is why I love that man.

But see how boring my blog gets when I rely on the boring parts? Yes, you do, you see it right now….right now….right now. Okay, I’ll stop.

As I get into reading more about the International Style, or Modern style of architecture, it all changes. I think I’ve said before but it changes from building pretty buildings like Burnham did, to building basically…churches. In the 1900’s, 1920’s everyone starts being influenced by so much more, everything is changing and I’m trying to keep up with this new architecture and how it relates to the entire world around it.

I’ve talked a little about my “Master Builders” ( I love “quotes” today) and Corbu, Mies and Frank Lloyd Wright. That book sort of told me their lives, how they got started, what their influences were, yadda yadda. I could sort my way through it and it was interesting. Now I’m reading “The International Style” which was 3 guys getting together and actually naming the style of architecture that was going on right then. Which is odd right? Cause what kind of art anywhere names what kind of style it is when it’s going on? But these guys did, and in the 1930’s wrote this book.

BUT THE THING IS, it’s confusing me! It’s the ultimate hyperlink. Because it’s much more involved in what’s going on and the history of architecture as a whole, they keep referencing all the art that was going on at the time. So then, I’ve gotta try and figure out what the art was and how they were influenced by that, and who the painter was influenced by. And I love it, it’s all completely fascinating, but when they cruise on by a sentence like “The Individualists were consciously trying to achieve Neoplasticist architecture” I start to get confused.

I need a mentor, an architectural, art historian who can explain all of these things to me. Some people would call this “School”. But that’s too much, so I call it an architectural art historian.

Tonight, I play video games!

Or more precisely…game.
