Los Angeles!
We’re back, barely, but we’re back. And oh my lord what fun we had.
Everything went quite smoothly on the way there, no problems on the plane. We saw Away From Her on the plane, and I wept like a child. What a beautiful sad movie that is, Julie Christie gets Alzheimers and its really sad and simple and touching. I recommend it when one is feeling in a sad romantic mood. When we got to LA we took a very expensive cab ride to the Magic Castle Hotel (which had just been on The Hills the week before! Hee). We were in Hollywood, right by the Walk of Fame, no car, just our little feet to carry us.
This is the only star I felt I needed to take a picture of:
We went wandering around on Hollywood Blvd, marveling at those weird people who put on costumes and stand in front of the theater. We looked at all the stars and the shithole places around. John rightly asked the hotel guys where to find an In & Out Burger and that was DELICIOUS. Granted, I’m still burping up onion, but I figured that meant they were very good, fresh onions. Oh my gosh. So good. We went back to the hotel for a nap. We had grabbed a bottle of vodka (no bar at the Magic Castle) and woke from our nap to have a few drinks by the pool, then we went out walking again…I had seen from our walk previously that a bar called the Pig & Whistle had “pop karaoke” night so John and I had another drink or two and headed over there…
Glad we did, those suckers in LA don’t know how to do karaoke.
There were a bunch of people there but the karaoke guy really needed people to sign up, so up we went. I started with my ringer “On the Darkside”. People still weren’t going and I was pressuring John because he SAYS he has a karaoke song, but in all 4.5 years I’ve been with him I’ve never once seen the fellow sing. Well sing he did, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”. So cute. I love him.
And people just weren’t as supportive there, here…when someone gets up you clap and yell their name even if you don’t know them, no one did that there and John and I were pretty much working the crowd. It was hilarious. He ended up singing “Lion Sleeps Tonight” and I did “Giant Step” by the Monkees. And then we left the Pig and Whistle to their own devices, but what a fun night.
Friday we were up way too early and took the longest walk ever down Sunset Blvd. You know, everyone told me I’d hate LA, but what is there to hate? It’s a burger town, no doubt about it and it’s all about TELEVISION. Ain’t no one gonna put you down for loving burgers and television in LA. I thought it was great, and since we were in the armpit, we were still quite an attractive couple. We found a great little diner and had awesome breakfast.
My friend from high school, Lisa and her husband Charles arrived that night, so we had vodka drinks for them by the pool before heading off to the rehearsal dinner. That was great, we saw my friend Gingy looking happy and excited and tired. We drank and ate and had a good time there.
Saturday up early again and John and I lounged and watched Superman, the new one. It was so nice to just cuddle and be close. I loved it. Then we took another walk and ended up at some Italian Fest with Lisa and Charles, we won prizes and played Skeeball and headed home for the wedding.
The wedding was at a beautiful restaurant up in the hills, the view was like this:
And this:
The wedding was wonderful, quiet and beautiful in a garden outside, my other old old friends (really my oldest friend, met her when I was 10, traveled the world with her when I was 27 and haven’t talked to her much since then) came, Christy and her sister Corey and our friends were complete. We ate and laughed and danced and laughed some more and took walks down the path and stared at LA on a clear night with a beautiful moon.
Gingy and Gerry, so happy:
Sunday somehow we managed to stand up and get home.
We had such a good time, it was all so romantic with my new ring and Gingy’s wedding and old friends and man…just such a fun time.
I’m glad to be home, seeing trees and bike lanes, but I really enjoyed LA, more than I thought I would, and would be happy to go back.
Now, a month of extremely hard work on the book and BAM, in less than a month, it’s all about Vegas.
Poor me.
