Boyfriend? I miss you.
My handsome man has been working his hot (and incredibly tight) patootie off for weeks now. I’ve forgotten what life is like with both of us just hanging out together. I hope I get to remember in the next couple of days, maybe even this weekend! See, because I live with him for a reason, and that reason is I like to be with him and miss him when he’s gone. Smooch babe.
BUT! I have someone to keep me company (that’s a pun, you just don’t know it yet) on lonely nights, someone whose voice calls to me in the night, someone who can calm me by simply opening his mouth, someone who can alternately make me cry with sadness and cry with beauty. He may not be totally hot, especially physically (although he is cute as a button), and I believe he plays for the other team, he remains one of my favoriteist of men, and shall remain so as long as I live.
That man? Today’s contestant for Kinda Hot Wednesday? Is none other than Raul Esparza.
WHO? WHO THE HELL IS RAUL ESPARZA you may ask me on Kinda Hot Wednesday, and I will answer that he has the most beautiful voice in existence.
Raul Esparza is a Broadway star. He mostly does Sondheim shows, but was also in that horrible Boy George show and I originally saw him in the remount of Rocky Horror 8 years ago and didn’t realize it was him. But Raul was up on Sunday night for a Tony award for the remount of Company (which won best revival thank you very much) and my little man did not win, even though he should have.
I have also seen sweet boy Raul in 3 Lincoln Center shows my mother took me too, it was a Sondheim bonanza, two weekends, 3 shows a weekend, all Sondheim, and Raul was in 3 of those shows, bringing tears to my eyes in each and every one.
Last year John and I went to see Raul in Company in Cincinnati, it was a preview of the show that is on Broadway now (Company is my favorite Sondheim show) and I must have called 80 months ahead to get us tickets. We saw Company before everyone even knew what was going on, and after the show, I sat in my seat and wept like a child. Truly, that is no lie.
I met him once, when I was working at the Goodman and they were doing the new Sondheim show “Bounce”. Raul was there, I saw him outside and walked past him, almost saying nothing, but I screwed up my courage and introduced myself and gushed…figuring a then fairly-unknown Broadway guy would be most appreciative, and he was, he’s sweet and wonderful and even though he’s no Adrian Grenier (who now I know is REALLY NICE guy), he is beautiful and wonderful and I recommend seeing him wherever and whenever you can.
Welcome Raul. Please to enjoy him singing “Marry Me A Little” one of Sondheim’s most wonderful songs from Company. Edited to add: I just watched this whole thing and I'm sitting at my desk weeping again. Geez.
