Eat Crow

Could it be? Posted by Hello

Is it possible?

Me? The postmodern lover of all buildings?

The pro-ornament, pro-reference, pro-put everything you can on your building if it looks pretty?

Is it possible that my new favorite building in the city is the Miesian Equitable building?

This building was designed by Skidmore Owings and Merril (of Sears Tower and Hancock fame) at 401 N. Michigan avenue, built in 1962.

And I love it.

I’ve been walking by it on my new after work route, which also includes the Sun Times building destruction and rebuilding of Trump Tower (very fun to watch). And each time I look at it, it looks different.

Sometimes it’s green, sometimes it’s gray, sometimes it’s tall and scary sometimes light and beautiful.

I’ve been struggling with my new “favorite building”. I haven’t been sure which one has given me the most pleasure, the one I love looking at. And I find each time I walk by this building I strain to look at it, can’t take my eyes of it.

Blair Kamin in “Why Architecture Matters” also likes it. Saying it’s so good to it’s neighbors, stepping back on Mich Ave so we can see the Trib Tower in it’s glory. It’s dark windows, which are a change from most light colored windows.

I’m just fascinated by the way it changes color. Right now on this day, this is my favorite building, the one that holds my attention the most.

And look at me, said I hated Mies and his influence. Shows you what I know.

ALMOST TIME FOR SURVIVOR. This is the best season ever!
