Hellloooooo little blog! Hellloooooo!
It's been awhile, I've been crazy busy with personal, professional and extra professional activities that have prevented me from writing.
HOWEVER, I am back with a vengeance.
So, I learned all about Mies and his Modernism movement right? Equality, black boxes, no ornamentation, complete denial of the past in favor of the "machination" of the future.
But we all need to rebel against something yes? And along came a school to rebel against Mies. This was called (and not just in architecture) the postmodernism school.
Post modernist architecture is in rebellion to Mies. Black boxes are boring, uninteresting. PM buildings reference the past and the future. Adding back some ornamentation, some whimsy and some fun. Empty? Maybe, but not really from what I've seen.
Now apparently, and I still don't fully understand why, the postmodernists are SCORNED! No one wants to be a post modernist! Although for my money (we had a speaker who used this phrase over and over, I will now be incorporating it) post modernism stuff, at least as far as architecture goes, is some of the weirdest, best and craziest architecture I've seen.
Our buddy Helmut Jahn is the leader of this particular school at this point. He designed the State of Illinois Building, the United Terminal, the train tunnel into the United Terminal, the addition to the Stock Exchange and 120 N. LaSalle, one of the craziest buildings I"ve ever seen.
There's lots of cool cool cool post modernist buildings. More later, oh and I'm almost learning how to do the Link thing (look! I capitalized it like it was Link from Zelda) and if I can figure that out, I will post some very cool pictures that show you the cool post modernist stuff.
Can't believe Jen picked Jerry then UNPICKED Jerry and then basically told the whole world by wandering around with her new boyfriend Dec somethin. Whateves.
Go Boston Rob and Ambah. She's slammin.
