Thursdian

I have not much to say today. I think I’m a bit burnt from the past week. I’m very much looking forward to the weekend!

So let’s see, here are a few thoughts as of late:

I’m reading The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. He writes like this:

The girl, who had been, once, young and beautiful, was now, only recently, showing her age, previously she had not, but was still lovely, if not, still beautiful.

I love the book, I tease with love. It’s a scary ghost story with creepy kids and it’s a pretty fun read.

Saturday I have to be up crackass early to take a tour on the boat before the boat goes out for its official first tour of the season. It’s supposed to be beautiful on Saturday, so I’m pooping about that a little.

Getting back into studying architecture is hard, mostly because a study of architecture is a study of art history. Mies’ movement, Modernism or International Style is so influenced by artists, Mondrian being the key. I know a little about Mondrian and cubism, boxiness/rectilinear lines mostly, which the Modernists use for their very right angle buildings…but to really understand what those silly Germans were doing, takes so much more study than just reading about architecture. I’m sure that’s true of any art, but it makes it hard to concentrate on just one thing.

And I told John he has to teach me a little about engineering, because I have a lot of bridges to learn about (we have 57 bridges, 37 are moveable and the tour passes under 24 of them) and the words “double leaf trunnion bascule bridges” means absolutely nothing to me, but hopefully soon, it will.
Ack.

Please to enjoy a little Mondrian for your Thursday.

ooooh! after you finish turn of the screw, you have to watch the 1961 film adaptation, The Innocents. not entirely faithful to the book, but SO creepy and weird. http://imdb.com/title/tt0055018/

Apparently Henry was good with the turn of the comma as well.

Watch out for Dave Matthews. Hear he's in town.
