Suffism City

So, getting to know my new neighborhood has been fun. Actually, I know the neighborhood pretty well, but had missed some things my first time around living here.

Like Carl Sandburg’s house! NEAT.

And also, this:

This is a House of Sufism. I had to look sufism up on wikipedia. Apparently it’s a form of Islam that denies duality (like yin/yang, etc) and believe that God is devoid of all form and that everything is a part of everything. So you therefore let go of your individual self as well, nothing is separate. It even says it pre-dates Islam, and that Islam was just the natural vehicle for it.

Huh.

I’m still confused. But know more now than I knew five minutes ago. Here is a suffistic (is that a word?) metaphor to help clear the air.

"There are three ways of knowing a thing. Take for instance a flame. One can be told of the flame, one can see the flame with his own eyes, and finally one can reach out and be burned by it. In this way, we Sufis seek to be burned by God."

Thanks Wikipedia!

Cool. I didn't know I lived near Carl Sandburg's house. Where is that? Is that the Metra tracks behind it? I've been to his house in North Carolina. It's got a great view.

It's on Hermitage between Wilson and whatever street that is to the north that I can't think of. So it must be like...4670 something Hermitage. And the House of Sufism is right next door!
