Okay, as I’m getting back into my world not being about life changing events, but being back to earth changing events like architecture, I find I am still scattered. But that the aesthetics of architecture are slipping back into my every day life, and then some.
Consider this:
I am a Miesian eater.
Yup. I’m a modernist, Miesian eater.
Here are some characteristics of a Miesian building:
No applied ornament:
Now, last night I got a turkey sandwich with tomato, lettuce, onion and bacon. I chose this sandwich and had them make it to my specificities. I effectively stripped off the tomato, lettuce and onion when I got home (because really, who takes bacon off of anything? Not even Mies my friend, not even Mies).
“Less is more”. Less is more with a turkey sandwich, really, the turkey, bacon and bread is all that’s necessary, anything else is just…well…dressing.
Regularity vs. symmetry
I much prefer things regular vs. symmetrical, don’t you?
Structure:
I could clearly define the sandwiches structure
Volume vs. Mass
Now, the sandwich had a pretty good mass to it, but so does the Federal Center, so it’s okay. The real thing is the sandwich worthy of its calories? And does it make it more worthy if it’s just…bigger? No, not necessarily, what you want is a sandwich that can hold it’s own, bigger ain’t necessarily better. And heavier ain’t necessarily better.
Now the turkey sandwich is an example, but I find more and more food on my plate, not because I’m eating less, but because I feel I need to break the food down. Bring out its inner structure and not to adorn it with all kinds of useless ornamentation. Give me the staples of the food and no more. I don’t need no fancy ornament.
Rob and Ambah still kickin it on the Amazing Race.
And if you’re not watching Starlet, there is something right with you, or something very VERY wrong with you
