Hand Building

In my eternal quest (eternal as of about 3 weeks ago) of searching for my creativity, I decided to take a "handbuilding" class. Handbuilding is on Tuesdays, in case you didn't know.

Handbuilding as in still building pots but building them with your hands instead of a wheel.

There is something about "ceramic" pots and things that I find extremely unattractive. I think my primary problem might be a "glaze" issue. I've got glaze problems, no doubt about it. And I thought I was joining more of a sculpture class, but I guess we all have to start somewhere right?

Between the half bored but complimentary gay teacher and the other women in the class who looked just like me, I enjoyed it. I stuck my hands in lots of clay, threw it on the table, cut it with wire and managed to shape things into an undiscernable thing that weighed a ton. My half bored teacher seemed to like my shapes and even showed the President. The President of ceramics.

It's really just fascinating to head into a completely different world. To see the people that hang out in there every night, working on their craft, cementing friendships (no pun intended). These are people I would never meet, never talk to, never hear their stories or opinions.

If you are all VERY lucky, maybe I'll take a pic of an uneven heavy thing I make and post it. But no promises.

AND I SWEAR, Chicago learning will be back next week. But the New Yorker's coming tomorrow.
